There was a time in this city when eating the wrong sweet could get you arrested. A shopkeeper found a loophole: he hid the Indian flag inside a barfi, in three illegal colours, and sold it to freedom fighters as dessert. You'll eat that same sweet. You'll also eat breakfast inside the house where modern Hindi literature was invented — because in Banaras, even carbohydrates come with footnotes.
